Project summary: In recent years there has been a large increase in exposure to electromagnetic radiation (namely microwaves and radio waves) resulting from the use of electronic equipment. Although more evidence is needed to demonstrate the risk associated with exposure to these radiations, the topic is seen by public health authorities, including the World Health Organization, as a priority area. As such, it is necessary to adopt preventive measures that focus on reducing the amount of radiation that is absorbed by the human body. One of these measures involves the use of textiles specifically designed to provide attenuation characteristics to these radiations.
It is in this sense that the RFProTex – Innovative Textiles for Radiofrequency Radiation Protection project arises, with the main objective of researching and developing clothing with electromagnetic radiation attenuation properties, through innovative finishing technologies, such as depletion, impregnation and coating/ coating. Radiation attenuation should be based on energy absorption (existing solutions based on energy reflection can cause electromagnetic interference), for a wide range of microwave and radio waves. The garments to be developed have as their target segment, high and medium-high fashion customers, who are looking for pieces with a sophisticated design, made with high quality, comfortable, light and breathable textiles (current solutions are mostly job).
Activities: 1. Technical management and project coordination;
2. Preliminary studies and technical specifications;
3. R&D of new solutions for microwave and radio wave attenuation;
4. Construction of prototypes;
5. Tests/assays and validation;
6. Promotion and dissemination of results.
Expected results: ✓ Development of textile structures with microwave and radio wave attenuation properties by finishing processes.
✓ Development of textile structures with microwave and radio wave attenuation properties based on energy absorption.
✓ Development of textile structures capable of attenuating a wide range of microwave and radio waves.
✓ Development of everyday garments with microwave and radio wave attenuation properties.
